The world’s most powerful Search Box received a long-awaited update.

  • The biggest change to Google Search in 25 years: A complete structural shift to accommodate conversational queries.
  • Expanding input fields: The search box dynamically expands as you type longer, more detailed questions.
  • Beyond text search: Native support for dragging and dropping visual assets, documents, and tabs directly into the prompt bar.
  • Intent-driven autocomplete: Predictive suggestions are now based on genuine search intent rather than simple historical popularity.
  • Seamless AI Mode integration: Simple searches transition fluidly into interactive AI threads when complex follow-ups are needed.

A quarter of a century after its inception, Google has unveiled a major evolution of its signature online search bar, known now as the ‘Google Intelligent Search Box’. Far from being a mere cosmetic refresh, this update fundamentally alters how users interact with the search engine in the AI era. Let’s learn more about this update below:

The familiar autocomplete feature, which previously defaulted to broad popularity metrics, now analyses underlying user intent instead. The result is a far more intuitive and bespoke list of suggestions tailored to what you are actually trying to achieve.

Rather than forcing users to compress their thoughts into clipped keyword based searches, the new search bar physically expands to accept natural, conversational prompts. Searching online is no longer about guessing the right keyword combination; it feels far more like asking a knowledgeable peer a question in plain English.

Searching is no longer restricted to text alone. The updated bar allows you to drag and drop images, videos, PDFs, files, and even open Chrome tabs straight into the prompt box to initiate a search.

When a basic answer isn’t enough, complex or multi-layered queries seamlessly branch out into an interactive AI Mode. This allows for continuous follow-up questions without forcing you to restart the search from scratch.

  • Evolving search behaviour: As users adopt natural, long-tail phrases, you will likely spot a broader variety of conversational search terms in your Google Ads reporting. While broad match keywords should capture many of these nuanced queries, Google strongly recommends leveraging smart, keywordless formats – such as Performance Max (PMax) – to ensure complete coverage.

  • Impact on organic & paid clicks: As more queries resolve directly within AI Mode, standard Search campaigns may experience a dip in traditional click-through rates. While ads inside AI Mode placements are not yet universally live, active testing is already underway. It is only a matter of time before ad units become standard across these conversational surfaces.
